In the period after the First World War the DWM factory and later Simson and Mauser produced Lugers using their own numbering systems. Also the Erfurt factory used its own numbering sequence, so there are actually 4 components to the number, maker, year, number, suffix. Magazines had the full 4 numbers and sometimes the letter depending on the Army numbering orders covering that year. The 2 digit sequence would appear over and over every 100 numbers and the year would not matter. You can see why members are always searching for the right number on parts which were often marked with only the last two digits of the serial number. In 1917 the number would start all over at 1.

A 1916 Luger would start at number 1 and go to 9999 then the next number is 1a to 9999a then 1b etcetera. The Imperial German military numbering system consisted of three components, a date on the barrel, a four digit number and a letter suffix. If,like me, your typing is somewhat limited, try using all lower case.
